-tion endings

Some suffixes are added to nouns in order to create verbs.

Note that verbs that end with a /d/ or /s/ sound, are added -sion (not -tion).

 

These endings sound the same or slightly similar. Listen to the sounds on their own:

/∫/: Words that end in -tion: decoration, direction, addition.

Words that end in consonant + -sion: extension, version, expression.

/ʒ/: Words that end in vowel + -sion: conclusion, confusion, explosion.

 

Other endings that sound /∫/ are:

-tian: There are only a few examples with this ending. They usually mean place of origin or belief: Martian or Dalmatian.

-cian: There are a few examples with this ending. They usually mean occupations or jobs: magician, musician or politician.
