Reporting verbs

When we talk about reported speech we refer to the action of reporting (saying) what another person said before.

See the example below:

Example:           ‘I love rock music’ Sara said.  (Direct speech)

           Sara said that she loved rock music. (Reported/indirect speech)

See that in the reported speech we use a verb to introduce the sentence, in this case said. In this unit we are going to classify the main reporting verbs.

Verb + infinitive
Promise – Agree – Offer

Example: I promised to water the plants once a week.

Verb + object + (not) infinitive
Warn – Persuade – Invite – Advise – Ask – Remind - Tell

Example: Tony warned us not to eat that piece of cake.

Verb + preposition + verb + ing
Complain about – Apologise for – Accuse of – Admit to

Example: My brother apologised for breaking the windowpane.

Verb + verb + ing
Recommend – Suggest - Admit – Deny

Example: The boy suggested going for a walk before it started raining.

Verb + (that) sentence
Explain – Say – Admit – Agree – Complain – Promise – Recommend

Example: Susan explained that she was going to move to Australia.

Verb + object + (that) sentence
Warn – Promise – Persuade – Tell – Remind – Suggest

Example: My mum promised me that she would buy the trading cards!

Note: many of the verbs listed above, for instance promise, can be used in one or more structures.
