Unitat 21

Present and past simple passive

We use the passive voice when the action is more important than the person who does the action, or when this person is not known or doesn't want to be mentioned.

Contingut exercicis

So, imagine that someone shot another person. You don't know who did the action, so you would use the passive voice. Instead of saying: “Someone shot a man” you could say “A man was shot”. By using the passive voice, you give importance to the action rather than who did it.

To make the passive voice the order of the elements changes:

  • Active voice: Josh writes a letter.
  • Passive voice: A letter is written (by Josh).

subject + [to be + Past Participle] + (by + agent)

The negative is formed by adding “not” right after the verb “to be”. Although it is not obligatory, you can also say who does the action in the active voice after the preposition “by” in the passive (in this case “by Josh”).

The interrogative is formed by changing the order of the verb “to be” as in active voice questions.
