First conditional

Conditionals are sentences with two clauses – an “if” clause and a main clause – that are closely related.

Contingut exercicis

There are three different conditional clauses. The first one is divided into two: the zero conditional and the first conditional.

  • 0 conditional: We use the zero conditional to talk about things that are always true.

If you heat water, it boils.

  • 1 conditional: We use the first conditional when we talk about real and possible situations.

If they win this match, they will win the championship.

We make the zero and first conditionals with:

Zero conditional

If clause (present simple)

Main clause (present simple)

If you heat water

It boils

First conditional

If clause (present simple)

Main clause (future with “will”)
If they win this match

They will win the championship

It's not important what clause goes first. The order of the clauses can be changed in both conditionals.

When making questions, the order of some of the words change like they do in ordinary questions:

What will you tell your mum if you don't pass the exam?

Does water boil if you heat it?

Notice that the subject goes between the auxiliaries “will” or “does” and the main verb.
